In this episode of SecurityANGLE, our series focused on all things cybersecurity, I'm joined by Joe Peterson, an engineer, analyst, and CUBE Collective community member, to share insights into the top six cloud security trends we're tracking in 2024.
Global cloud spending is on the rise, and security strategies are top of mind
According to Security Today, global cloud spending is expected to grow more than 20% in 2024 as more organizations implement a cloud-first approach. As assets increasingly shift to hybrid and multi-cloud environments, we expect security strategies to be top of mind as threat actors continue to search for vulnerabilities to exploit across interconnected cloud deployments. As an aside, if you're interested in IT spending forecasts for 2024, check out my colleague Dave Villanti's breaking analysis on the topic using the latest research from Enterprise Technology Research.
Why focus on cloud security trends? Threat actors don't sit still. They are rapidly adapting as organizations adopt a cloud-first approach, and organizations must be prepared to redouble their data protection efforts and cloud security strategies to thwart cyber threats, especially those targeting attractive newer cloud technologies such as container-based and serverless resources.
As we revealed on this week's show, the six cloud security trends that your security and cloud security teams should be aware of and that we explain in this episode include:
– The zero trust model is quickly turning stakes on the table, and for good reason.
Implementing AI and machine learning for the cloud is key; Hyperscalers have begun providing guidance to end users on securing AI, and we expect this to continue.
— CSMA is a rapidly gaining ground in cyber defense strategy that autonomously secures devices through their own perimeter (firewalls/network security tools). CMSA helps provide a multi-layered defense against cyber threats, making it difficult for attackers to successfully penetrate an organization's network.
—Secure Access Service (SASE) continues to see rapid adoption.
— DevSecOps automation can significantly reduce the number of errors that occur when performing security analysis manually.
– Cloud Native Protection Platforms (CNAPPs) are becoming increasingly popular (part of the reason for acquisitions like SentinelOne's recent purchase of PingSafe), and we expect interest in and adoption of CNAPPs to continue to rise.
